Naya Rodriguez Ms. Ramona AP Language Composition Pd. 4 A Talk to Teachers; Rhetorical Analysis ââ¬ËA Talk to Teachersââ¬â¢ by James Baldwin published on December 21, 1963 is a very brave and direct message to teachers on how they are contributing to the prejudice in society during that time period. Baldwinââ¬â¢s tone in this essay shifts frequently however, the constant tone that enhances his purpose of this essay is urgency. Baldwinââ¬â¢s urgency to make teachers change the prejudice view on ââ¬Å"negrosâ⬠and the false history that is being taught about African Americans. For he refers to it as ââ¬Å"any negro who is born in this country and undergoes the American educational system runs the risk of being schizophrenic.â⬠Baldwin soon states hisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The turning point in the essay is when Baldwin states ââ¬Å"Because if I am no what Iââ¬â¢ve told I am, then it means that youââ¬â¢re not what you thought you were either! And that is the crisis.â⬠By stating this it recognizes the faults in the education system, and leaves the audience intrigued wanting him to elaborate on his point. This statement also unfolds the truth about education which is ââ¬Å"if you lie about one aspect of anybodyââ¬â¢s history, you must lie about it all.â⬠The last paragraph of his essay he changes his pronoun usage to ââ¬Å"youâ⬠in order to make the audience realize that he has spoken his part on his feelings toward education and now itââ¬â¢s left to the audience to continue. ââ¬Å"It is your responsibility to change society if you think of yourself as an educated person.â⬠He continues to end his essay with a bright and inspiring tone using repetition and the example of what he would do if he was a teacher. The ending is the most powerful part because it appeals to the reader in both logos and pathos when explaining how society should have been taught.
